Sacred Struggle: The Living Legacy of Unitarian
and Universalist Social Justice

Presented by Harvard Divinity School Senior Lecturer Dan McKanan

Please join the UU Urban Ministry and Dan McKanan, the newly hired Ralph Waldo Emerson UUA Senior Lecturer in Divinity at Harvard University, for a thoughtful look at the intersection of our UU faith and social action.

Unitarian Universalists justly take pride in our traditions' heritage of struggle for social justice. From Joseph Tuckerman's urban ministry to Adin Ballou's communitarian experiment at Hopedale, from the prophetic preaching of Theodore Parker to the pioneering ministries of Antoinette Brown Blackwell and Mary Livermore, and on to our contemporary witness for marriage equality and global peacemaking, we have dozens of heroic stories to tell. But what parts of those stories should be most alive in our congregations today?

The unique insight of Unitarian and Universalist social justice is the idea that we can encounter the holy in the midst of struggle for social change. We do not (only) bring our faith to our activism; we also find it there. Again and again, Unitarians and Universalists have seen the face of the divine in the faces of our partners in social change movements. And, transformed by this vision, we have dared to transform our communities. In this presentation and workshop, Dan McKanan will use a cluster of historical examples to develop this idea, and challenge participants to identify the holy fire in our contemporary activism.
