The plans for "energy justice" events in Boston and on Cape Cod continue to develop. And you're all invited to join us for either of these events or for both of these events at the end of the holiday season.
NEW YEARS EVE: The Boston event will start "at around noon," at the Community Church in Boston. It will continue to "around 7:00 pm." Volunteers will be on Boylston Street to distribute information about low-income fuel assistance, affordable housing, home energy conservation, and related concerns. The emphasis will be of helping low-income people with their immediate needs, at the start of winter.
We'll invite people into Community Church for light refreshments and entertainment. The theme is "Energy, Peace, Justice." So we'll have information from peace activists, human rights people, and others.
We'll be showing a DVD that includes the Van Jones lecture, at the 2008 General Assembly. It's one of
the best introductions to the theme of "environmental justice." A "must see" for congregations.
NEW YEARS DAY: Cape Cod's "Energy, Peace, and Justice" event will start at 11:00 am, at the Woods Hole Community Hall in Woods Hole. At noon, we'll have a lively parade around Eel Pond, in Woods Hole.
One again, there will be lots of emphasis on helping people as they cope with the economic recession, with the continuing wars, and with the cold weather season. We've done this for several years.
If you want more information on either event, let me know. My telephone number appears below.
What's the vision for "energy justice"?
It's still the same. We want all people, in all places, to enjoy an adequate supply of energy that is safe,
affordable, and sustainable. Even in Massachusetts, there are some people who need to consume MORE
energy, not less, in order to survive with some measure of dignity..... So a discussion about "reducing energy use" is nice, but, gosh, folks, it won't help the homeless and it won't help the elderly people who
are struggling to pay for the basics of transportation, home heating, and home light.
In the first half of the year 2009, we hope to have a Massachusetts conference for Unitarian Universalists who are concerned about social justice and the environment.... The event will probably be scheduled for Boston.... Lots of emphasis on food issues, energy issues, and other basics... I'll keep you posted.
May all of your holidays be warm and bright!
