Volleyball Marathon
Join us on Saturday between 9 and 5, on April 4, 2009 at Babson College to play volleyball and benefit the William Ellery Channing Elementary School in Hyde Park and Promise the Children.
This volleyball fundraiser is sponsored by students at Babson College, and volunteers from the Channing School Partnership and Promise the Children. Volleyball marathons are popular fundraisers and have been organized by many non-profits throughout the country. Babson College offers a beautiful indoor gymnasium with plenty of parking. We invite teams of young people, adults or mixed generations. We will match teams according to their experience in playing volleyball.
HOW IT WORKS:
Form a team – ask your friends, family, co-workers to form a team of 8-12 players. Tell them it’s for a worthwhile cause and is lots of fun! Teams will play for 45 minute slots.
Registration – the registration fee is $750.00. If each person on the team of 12 members raised $63.00 through their friends and families, the team would have enough to enter! And there are prizes for the team that raises more!
$1000 – each player gets a t-shirt
$1200 – each player receives a t-shirt and a movie pass
$1500 or more – team gets a gift certificate for a team dinner
Money raised – goes to programs of the William Ellery Channing Partnership and Promise the Children.
The Channing Elementary School serves 325 students K-5th grade. Ninety percent are children of color, 85% are income eligible for free lunch and many are children from non-English speaking families who lack English Language skills. Most fall behind and are without the instruction that they need to pass the MCAS (MA Comprehensive Assessment System). In addition, the federal No Child Left Behind Act is under funded and cannot provide the mandated professional tutoring. Our goal is to see that all children have the wellbeing and education to pursue successful lives.
Although our Channing volunteers have provided essential help over the last two years, we see the need for systemic change. We now partner with Promise the Children, a non-profit organization that researches public policy issues and works with community organizations to support access to health care, adequate nutrition and quality education for all children, including those in low-income families. Promisethe Children also supports full funding for federal mandates in the No Child Left Behind Act.
